An Engineer's Guide to Banana Bread
Every once in a while one of your crazy ideas actually clicks with a client. I asked a long-time engineering firm client if I could write up a piece titled "An Engineer's Guide to Banana Bread." The idea was to write something light-hearted and relatable back in early 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was making everyone very nervous.
Why banana bread? I, along with many friends on my social accounts, and even celebrities and influencers seemed to be suddenly obsessed with baking. I think the stay-at-home cabin fever manifested itself this way. I chose banana bread to intentionally deflate the seriousness of baking; while many of us were cutting our teeth on sourdough, I wanted to focus on a glorified cake made out of rotten bananas.
Michigan's Got Talent, Let's Keep It
I was asked to write a piece on a Detroit-based software engineering program for young programmers by the name of "Hacker Fellows." This piece required a lot of research on the program and I had to pore through pages and pages of interviews of current attendees and alumnae to put together a piece that targeted potential investors.
The client liked this piece so much that they asked me to write an accompanying piece for the students themselves. The end result was a two-pronged written campaign that advocated for fundraising as well as filling seats.
Boron Nitride Grades: What They Are & Why They Matter
One of my clients manufactures and sells industrial ceramics. Needless to say, writing content for them was a challenge. It required heavy research on the topic of engineered ceramics. Moreover, it was a constant struggle to write for the audience, which was in this case, potential leads for their business.
I chose to write their content somewhere between a chemical engineer and a salesperson; at a crossroads between technical and simple. I find that, when writing this type of content, analogies that form clear pictures in your visitors' heads is the easiest way to communicate the technicalities of your industry. Your product has to be relatable, and so do the problems it solves.
I'll write that for you.
Let me know if you want to talk about your architecture, engineering, and construction content writing.
Thank you! I'll get back to you ASAP.
